Dean announces: Eastern Europe Trip 2009
Aug 17th
UcDean’s amazingly successful Eastern Europe Trip 2008 will get a sequel. From June 15 to June 23, right after the graduation ceremony, Dean will take 15 lucky students on yet again an amazing journey to Eastern Europe. Although the exact programme and itinerary are still unknown, Dean’s Eastern Europe Trip 2009 will most probably focus on Poland and Ukraine. Expect meetings with high-profile politicians, leaders of notable NGO’s and social organisations and of course loads of fun in Warsaw, Kiev, Lviv and Krakow. The Eastern Europe Trip 2009 is a particular good option for third year students to celebrate their graduation, so don’t miss out this unique opportunity. Just as last year Dean aims to offer this experience at a reduced price of € 299, all transportation, accommodation and entrance fees included. Additional information about the route and the exact price will be published in spring 2009. The application procedure will open in March 2009. Keep the dates free in your agenda!
Sign up for De Pers Delivery
Aug 17th
From September 1 onwards, Dean resumes its awarded daily free delivery of quality newspaper De Pers, directly to students’ postboxes. Signing up for this unique, free service is now possible by posting in the appropriate section on our webpage. Please note that subscriptions from last year are not valid anymore, so even when you received De Pers last year, you will have to sign up again for our free service. Please also consider volunteering in the deliverance of De Pers. We depend on your help, and only when at least 10 volunteers have been found before September 1, we will be able to offer this service again this year. Helping out will cost you only 15 minutes every two weeks, even less when more people sign up. Together we stand strong! This has been Dean’s motto from the start of our organisation.
This is UCDean in 2008/2009
Aug 17th
Dear First years and other first time visitors,
UcDean, established in the fall of 2007, is UCU’s first and primary social action body. During the first year of its existence, UcDean became famous for its fantastic social events, its unrivalled campus services and the determination with which it fought for the improvement of campus life. Many students still clearly remember the Dean Food Service, which ran almost every weekday in the winter of 2007/2008, providing students with cheap, high quality food deliveries right to their dorms. Almost 100 students profitted from UcDean’s free newspaper delivery service, a service which will return in 2008/2009, and over 100 students attended UcDean’s Amazing ValentineFestivity in February 2008. Two of the biggest events in the history of University College Utrecht were hosted by Dean in May 2008. Dean’s first Wie is de Mol weekend became a tremendous success, with 15 participants fighting in 25 games, ranging from nocturnal droppings to aero gliding, from fire spitting to boat races on the Loosdrechtse Plassen. Just three weeks after this event, Dean took another 15 students on a incredible journey to Eastern Europe. Participants of UcDean’s Eastern Europe trip had meetings at the Latvian Ministry of Finance in Riga, in Tallinn with several high profile Estonian members of parliament, got a city bike tour through Berlin and engaged in crazy partying in Vilnius. Both of these events return in May/June 2009, even better and more spectacular than last year. At this webpage you can familiarise yourself with Dean’s mission and its activitities. Please note that due to exchange of the organisation’s General Secretary most of UcDean’s activities will only commence in February 2009. If you have any questions up until that moment, please do not hesitate to contact us: dean_uc@live.nl. If you want to become involved in UcDean, or run one of our many subgroups, send us a mail: dean_uc@live.nl.
Hans Hindriks
General Secretary
Dean will be back in February 2009
Jul 8th
Dearest visitors,
Dean wants to thank all its members and visiters, and everybody who participated in the events of our organisation, for a fantastic year! Dean will be back in February 2009 for another three months full of action and incredible events, such as the biggest activity ever organised in university history: Dean’s Who is the Mole 2009 Gevecht in de Grensstreek. Ten days packed with action, in 5 different countries, from May 16 till May 25. The application window for this unique experience opens in January 2009. In the meanwhile, check http://hanshindriks.wordpress.com/for the USA weblog of the General Secretary, Hans Hindriks. Delivery of De Pers will also continue. More information about that service will be published at this page in August.
Dean presents its agenda for the rest of the semester
Apr 19th
Although some committees are already done with their activities for this year, Dean continues its events till the very last day of the summer term! But before we announce the events that will take place during your summer courses, we present the four remaining highlights of the semester.
Wednesday April the 23rd: Baltic Film Festival: Forest of the Gods
Dean will screen the Lithuanian classic “Forest of the Gods” in Voltaire Lounge, starting at 22.00. The movie tells the story of a man- an artist and an intellectual- who was imprisoned by two brutal regimes, the Nazis and the Soviets. Living by his own personal version of the Ten Commandments and after miraculously surviving imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp, he writes a memoir of his life, which becomes the target of the Soviet censors. The so-called “freedom” of Communism becomes just as oppressive as the German concentration camp.
Entrance is free, and non-members and non-participants of our eastern europe trip are also warmly welcomed. Drinks and snacks will be available! The movie is shown in the original Lithuanian language with English subtitles.
Friday April the 25th: Prom/Charity Ball + TrainTogetherTrip
Fully supported by Dean, the USCA Charity Ball. Tickets are still sold in the upcoming week, so join your friends and Dean in what is going to be an amazing party. You can join us to the festival by train. We meet at 22.00 at the Central Station and take the train of 22.10 to Amsterdam. Join us!
Friday May the 2nd till Sunday May the 4th: Dean’s Wie is de Mol
Certainly the most spectacular event ever held in the history of University College: Dean’s Wie is de Mol: Strijd der Elementen (Fight for the Elements) will take place at various locations in Utrecht and Flevoland. Both the opening ceremony (Friday at 15.00) and closing ceremony (Sunday at 20.30) are accessible to all students! Show up and support your friends or view how to prepare for and engage in great activities and games. On Saturday evening (from 18.00) you are also welcome to watch a sensational experience taking place on the FootballField. Of course, we cannot say anything yet about what’s going to happen, but certainly you have never seen this before!
Monday April the 28th & Wednesday May 7: Baltic Film Festival
Dean hosts a true Baltic Film Festival, showing the best ever documentaries and movies from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The movies are essential preparation material for participants to our Eastern Europe trip, but also very interesting to other students. On Monday April the 28th we show the excellent documentary The Singing Revolution, on Estonia’s road to independence. On Wednesday May the 7th we finish with You am I, a fascinating Lithuanian drama. All movies start at 22.00 in Voltaire Lounge.
Monday May the 19th till Monday May the 26th: Eastern Europe Trip
14 students join in an historic journey to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Become the new Dean. Apply now!
Apr 11th
With the USCA and ASIC elections coming up, I believe that it is time to think for a while about the future of your favourite social action body on campus, Dean! As most of you know, next semester I will be on exchange in Wisconsin and therefore not able to lead Dean. However, I do not think that I am irreplaceable. Indeed, I truly believe that there are other enthusiastic, determined, creative and approachable members, students of this college, who can take over the task of guiding and leading our social action group. <!--more-->
Dean thinks that the time of hostility between USCA and ASIC should be over and that the two organisations should reinforce each other, rather than compete amongst each other for attention and appreciation. USCA will guide social activities and events on campus –coming from the many committees, while ASIC is responsible for reflecting the opinion of the students’ body in College Hall. This has been the basic idea of the establishment of two separate institutions from the start of our college onwards. However, over the past years, it has proven to be difficult for ASIC to radically influence College Hall decisions, especially on high-profile issues. To improve its legitimacy, recognizability and accountability, ASIC has started to deliver some services to students, such as bike and oven rental. Nevertheless, the provision of these services has been beyond the initial mandate of the organisation.
Stress? Dean helps! Wallmarket and Food Service work for you.
Mar 12th

Dean writes history with Eastern Europe trip
Mar 2nd
The most spectacular trip ever organised in the history of University College Utrecht will take a limited number of students to Berlin, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius from Monday May the 19th till Monday May the 26th. A record number of applications has reached Dean and emotions ran very high when Dean had to pick 12 lucky participants over the past night. These students have been accepted on our incredible journey for the price of only € 279,99, all transportation, accommodation, guided tours, entrance fees included!
Dean is sorry for all those people who we had to disappoint. However, there is still a chance to join! Although we do not anymore apply for the extremely low fares which were on offer to our first applicants, Dean will accept another 3 highly motivated students for this life-time experience for the total price of only € 349,00! If you have any questions about the programme, or just want to apply straight away, please send us a mail (dean_uc@live.nl). People who were not accepted in the first round can still try again. The final lucky 3 participants will be announced in the course of next week!
Improved Eastern Europe trip! Sign up before Tuesday 4/03
Mar 1st
Dean has improved its Eastern Europe trip and now promises a truly astonishing experience into the soul of our new Eastern European neighbours. To cater for students who still have exams on Monday the 19th of May, we will now leave only after the exams have finished, to return just before the summer courses start, on Sunday the 25th of May.
Dean’s improved Eastern Europe itinerary will bring you from the starting point of the Cold War, the symbolic nucleus in the East-West division, Berlin, all the way up to Estonia’s lovely capital Tallinn, after which we will delve into the Russian-European clash of civilisations in Riga, Latvia, just to finish off in Vilnius, the charming capital of bustling Lithuania.
In spite of this even more sensational route off the beaten track and into the hidden gems of new Europe, the costs for our trip are still only € 249, all transportation, accommodation, guided tours and entrace fees included! This price is subject to minor changes. We will book on Tuesday the 4th of March, so sign up as quickly as possible to secure yourself a spot on this unforgettable journey, which is surely the best way to finish your semester at UC.
Dean fights for Wireless Internet on Campus
Feb 28th
From today onwards, Dean launches a determined and committed campaign to provide campus with wireless internet as from the start of the new academic year onwards. We will continuously exert pressure on the people and institutions involved to finally implement wireless internet on campus. We will first focus on the Academic Buildings, after which we will turn to all residential buildings on campus. In the upcoming days, Dean will launch a signature campaign in Dining Hall. The signatures will be delivered to the persons in charge, notably College Hall (implementation) and ASIC. Together we will stand strong!
Discover Eastern Europe with Dean. 7-day fieldtrip in May only € 249
Feb 22nd
We have heard about them, the new member states of the European Union, but four years after their accession into the European Union still hardly anyone has visited the Eastern European countries. It’s grey, its old, its boring, we often hear. But aren’t those qualifications things from the past? They definitely are, because the hippest, most modern part of Europe is now really in the East, where completely new cities are built and old cities are being transformed, without losing the heritage of an often very violent past. Celebrate four years of Europe for Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia during Dean’s unique ‘Discover the East’ fieldtrip. We will see how the old and the new are interwoven, and how Europe is given shape and meaning in some of the most remarkable and interesting Eastern European countries. Under professional guidance of a true Eastern Europe specialist, who has lived himself in Lithuania and travelled all across Eastern Europe, we will visit the places where history is written, the future designed, as well as we will speak to the people that are currently in charge of managing the overheated economies of the East. Meetings with high-profile national and local politicians, NGO’s and businesspeople are all scheduled.

Dean launches new subgroup: Cook&Co
Feb 22nd
Dean has launched a new subgroup, specialising in the art of cooking and good food. Dean’s Cook&Co will be campus’ only group of students who actually like to cook and feel frustrated with Dining Hall and the lausy unit kitchens. Dean’s Cook&Co will organise haute-cuisine dinners, workshops, excursions and lectures about healthy living, slow food, environmentally conscious consumption patterns, the latest cooking techniques, trends and much more. Furthermore, one of the important projects of Cook&Co during for this semester will be to draft a proposal for the USCA demanding the creation of a creative cooking place somewhere on campus. This place should be equipped with a fully professional kitchen where students can cook for bigger groups and experiment with exotic cooking styles, trying out new ingredients. If you want to become involved in this new subgroup, send a mail to dean_uc@live.nl. In the very near future, Cook&Co will organise its first event, to which all Dean-members will be cordially invited.

Feb 15th
No people crossing the quad, the academic buildings almost completely deserted. Dean’s movie night attracted more than 100 students to a fully packed Auditorium for what turned out to be one of the most moving and memorable evenings of the year. During three days, a maximum of 15 participants plays original, exciting, funny, scary, strange and spectacular games at different locations to earn money for a common moneybox. However, one of the candidates, secretely chosen to be the mole, will try to spoil as many games as possible, without revealing his/her true identity as the mole. Each day a test will disclose which partcipants know least about the identity of the mole. They will have to leave the game. In the sensational final on Sunday, the 5 best participants fight in a spectacular (air)race through Het Gooi for the last money and bits of information about the mole. Hier doe je het dus voor
Feb 12th
Toch?

Dean Weekly Newsletter
Feb 4th
To all those who did not receive, or read, Dean’s weekly update of 03/02/2008, on the future of our organisation.
Dearest members,
Last Friday, Dean celebrated once again a great success in the history of our social action body. By now, the strong ties between our members, and the loyalty to our organisation, rooted in mutual respect and appreciation, seem to have created a winning team of determined students which is difficult to defeat. However, with sadness Dean has to inform its members that beyond the façade of utter successes, Dean, its leader, members and organisation are increasingly coming under attack. Although Dean still feels strongly supported by a wide coalition of enthusiastic members, our presence at campus, interventions in and enrichments to college life and the determination that our leader and its members express, increasingly provoke non-members, students of UCU, to hinder our campaigns, blackmail and threaten us. SMOKING BAN MAINTAINED!
Feb 1st
Tonight, the General Assembly once again confirmed the smoking ban on tuesday, wednesday and friday nights in the USCA College Bar. This means that from now onwards, and hopefully till at least the end of this semester, smoking will not be allowed inside the bar on the beforementioned nights. Dean cordially thanks its members for their support and is proud that we again made the difference. Keen on Clean and Proud on Dean is now – more than ever before – a motto we can stand for.
